The Boykin Spaniel is medium in size, sturdy, and a typical spaniel. They are first and foremost a hunting dog with proven retrieving and flushing abilities characterized by boundless intelligence. Boykin Spaniels shows great desire to please. They are a strong swimmer, taking to the water easily, and is valuable for water retrieving as well as field retrieving.
Height: Male: 15 1/2 - 18 ", Females: 14 - 16 1/2 "
Weight: Male: 30 - 40 lbs., Females 25 - 35 lbs.
Colors: Solid, rich, liver (reddish brown or dark chocolate). Allowing small white spot on chest.
Coat: Wavy, curly, waterproof
Temperament: Boykin Spaniels are the typical Boykin Spaniel is friendly with an admirable disposition. They have no hostility towards other dogs or people in normal situations. Excessive timidity or hyperactivity is not seen with the Boykin's character.

Care and Exercise: Boykin Spaniels need bi-monthly brushing. Sheds in spring. Daily walking and swimming as the weather permits.
Training: Finesse and well-timed coaching will work better than some of the more severe methods used on large retrievers.

History: Developed by L. Whitaker Boykin of Spartanburg, South Carolina, a small brown spaniel was bred to various spaniels who had similar aptitudes resulting in the formation of the Boykin Spaniel family. A Springer, American Water, Spaniel, Pointer and Chesapeake Bay Retriever contribute to the history of the Boykin Spaniel breed.
